William A. Carrington

Councilman William A. Carrington is a proven servant leader whose work is rooted in integrity, collaboration, and measurable results. Known for leading with both compassion and accountability, he remains deeply committed to strengthening Pontiac's neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for all residents.

Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and raised in the working-class community of Flint, Michigan, William developed a deep appreciation for resilience, hard work, and community pride. In 2010, he relocated to Pontiac—a city he proudly calls home and continues to serve with dedication and purpose.

William holds two associate degrees from Charles Stewart Mott Community College in General Business and Business Management, a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Spring Arbor University, a Master of Public Administration from the University of Michigan–Flint, and a Master of Sociology from Wayne State University. Professionally, he serves as Data and Quality Manager for Wayne State University's School of Medicine and is an Adjunct Professor of Sociology at Oakland Community College and Henry Ford College.

Throughout his professional career, Councilman Carrington has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence, equity, and public health. His work focuses on improving systems, advancing quality outcomes, and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive compassionate, culturally responsive, and effective support—values that directly inform his approach to public leadership.

William's public service began with his election to the Pontiac Board of Education in 2014, followed by re-election in 2018. During his tenure, he served as Board President and Vice President, chaired the Policy Committee, and served on the GEMMS and Budget and Finance Committees. He also co-chaired the WeCare Movement, working alongside education advocates to successfully pass sinking fund and capital improvement millages that helped restore deteriorating school infrastructure and reduce the district's financial deficit. In recognition of his leadership, he received the Master Board Member Award from the Michigan Association of School Boards in 2020.

As a member of the Pontiac City Council, Councilman Carrington has been a strong advocate for equitable development and resident-centered policy. Key initiatives he has championed include bringing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administration back in-house to strengthen accountability, efficiency, and local control; advancing efforts to establish a Community Benefit Agreement ordinance to ensure residents share in the benefits of major development projects; and fighting to include social equity requirements in the City's recreational marijuana use ordinance to promote inclusive economic opportunity and fairness in emerging industries.

A proud resident of District 5, Councilman Carrington believes that organized and engaged residents are essential to building strong neighborhoods. He has served as a neighborhood association president since 2014, which led to the formal establishment of the WeCare Neighborhood Association, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in December 2016. The organization focuses on community safety, neighborhood beautification, education, and preserving Pontiac's "Home Zone." Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, it has sponsored community picnics, neighborhood clean-ups, and park restoration projects.

William is deeply committed to mentoring returning citizens, supporting youth and seniors, and fostering collective responsibility within the community. He currently serves on several local boards, including as Board Treasurer for the Pontiac Panther Youth Football and Cheer Organization and Life Beyond Retry (LBR). He previously served on the City of Pontiac Zoning Board of Appeals.

Councilman Carrington has received numerous recognitions for his service, including Oakland County Recognition Awards in 2015 and 2018; the Perfect the Parks Award in 2018; being named Political Figure of the Year by the Clarence E. Phillips Ascend Foundation in 2018; the Master Board Member Award from the Michigan Association of School Boards in 2020; the 2025 P.A.C.E. Employee Award from Oakland Community College for excellence in teaching; and the 2025 MDHHS Continuum of CARE UNIT Award from the State of Michigan, recognizing his outstanding care and advocacy for women, infants, children, and youth living with HIV.

William A. Carrington was elected to represent Pontiac City Council District 5 in November 2025 for a four-year term expiring January 1, 2030. He currently serves as President Pro Tem of the Pontiac City Council.
