Mikal Goodman

Mikal Goodman is a lifelong Pontiac resident who grew up on the city's East Side as the son of a single mother. He knows the struggles many families face—living on Section 8, relying on food stamps, and working hard just to get by. Those experiences shaped his belief that government should work for working people, not just the powerful.

Since taking office in 2021, Mikal has made housing justice his top priority. As the only renter on the City Council, he's led the fight to hold slumlords accountable and protect Pontiac families from exploitation. Mikal also helped secure $250,000 for homelessness prevention, with over $50,000 allocated directly to District 3.

Mikal authored and passed the strongest tenant protections in Pontiac history, including:

A mandatory rental registry so the city can finally track and target negligent landlords.

A groundbreaking rental escrow program that lets tenants pay rent to the city until landlords make critical repairs.

"Just Cause" eviction protections, stopping landlords from retaliating against tenants who speak up.

Bans on discrimination against Section 8 voucher holders and returning citizens.

Mikal has worked to bring tangible improvements to the neighborhoods he represents:

Oversaw the street repaving in North Hill Farms.

Installed speed humps to protect children in residential areas.

Repaired and replaced streetlights throughout the district.

Helped secure major upgrades for Hawthorne Park, creating the first county park in Pontiac right here in District 3.

Approved translation of city documents into Spanish and added bilingual staff to better serve all residents.

Before joining the Council, Mikal's career was rooted in the fight for environmental, racial, and economic justice—working alongside communities to build power and win change. He remains committed to those principles as he continues serving District 3.

Councilman Goodman believes Pontiac's best days are ahead. He stays focused on the isses that matter most: safe, affordable housing, strong neighborhoods, and a future where every resident can thrive.

Leadership and Committee Roles

On the City Council, Mikal plays an active role as Chair of the Communications, Engagement, and Operations Committee. He also serves on several other committees including Parks, Recreation & Public Works, Law & the Court, and Finance & Personnel.

Councilperson Goodman was elected to represent City Council District Three in November 2025 to a four-year term expiring on January 1, 2030.
